Southlake Residence

Southlake, TX
Project Description

The Southlake Residence, situated on a sloping site at a busy intersection, is a modern home that embraces light and openness while providing a secluded family living space. The architect addressed the site’s challenges, including a six-foot grade change and constant exposure, by incorporating subtle level changes and a courtyard wall. The level changes, such as the steps distinguishing the master suite from the main living areas, resolve the grade and create a natural threshold between public and private zones. The courtyard wall shapes an inward-facing garden, establishing a sense of refuge from the busy intersection.

Natural light guided every design decision, from the sculptural tower capturing evening sun to the light monitor in the garage. Old-growth pecan and oak trees line the property, buffering traffic and neighbors while softening solar exposure.

Crafted elements, such as exterior steel fins filtering western sun and a custom-fabricated steel stair with precisely detailed connections, anchor the design. The home’s success lies in the collaboration between the architect and clients, who brought a strong appreciation for light, proportion, and detail. “[The client] had some great ideas about design and material, especially the exterior brick, as it ties back to his Pakistani roots and the craftsmanship of masonry in that country,” says architect Thad Reeves. “We decided to use brick and mortar in a modern way.”

The exterior of the home features a warm, inviting brick facade that complements the natural surroundings and contributes to the timeless aesthetic of the residence. The authentic use of materials and attention to detailing reflect the architect’s interest in creating genuine and timeless architecture that lives comfortably while standing quietly, yet firmly, in place.
