On March 26, Stan McCarthy, whose tenure at Acme Brick Company spans four decades, entered the Texas Masonry Hall of Fame. This year’s induction ceremony was at one of the state’s most iconic masonry structures, the Alamo in San Antonio.
“The Texas Masonry Hall of Fame is more than just an accolade—it is a lasting tribute to the visionaries who have elevated the masonry construction industry across the Lone Star State,” said the Texas Masonry Council (TMC) in a statement. “By celebrating their expertise, innovation, and leadership, the Hall of Fame preserves their legacy and inspires future generations to uphold and continue the highest standards of the masonry industry.”
Capping a Remarkable Career
Stan has played a pivotal role at TMC, as its president in 2019 and currently on is board of directors. He also played a lead role in establishing TMC as the unified voice of the Lone Star State’s masonry industry.
The Southwest Brick Institute (SWBI) had championed “brick ordinances” that required builders to incorporate brick into new-home exteriors. Stan saw an opportunity for SWBI and TMC to join forces behind a broader masonry ordinance initiative. He was instrumental in the merger of SWBI into TMC, in 2011, and helped work out the funding structure for the new organization – which included multi-year commitments from brick manufacturers.
Countless homes and neighborhoods continue to benefit from the masonry ordinances that Stan worked to set in place. These communities in turn have had a ripple effect on newer developments as Texas continues to grow. In essence, they all bear witness to the leadership of Stan McCarthy: a “doer” who is quick to take on a challenge and run with it.
Building for the Future
In 2019, the Texas Legislature passed legislation that essentially voided local masonry ordinances. Undeterred, Stan helped TMC to pivot toward workforce development. TMC’s efforts to recruit and nurture masons starts at the high-school level, in partnership with organizations such as SkillsUSA. Meanwhile, he stayed engaged with state legislators to give the masonry industry a seat at the table. Meanwhile, he sought ways for Texas cities and towns to assert local control over commercial developments.
A consummate coalition builder, he places a high priority on consensus, win-win outcomes and team building. Through his leadership, passion for masonry, and unwavering good humor, he has built enduring industry partnerships and advocacy efforts.
A Stellar Career at Acme Brick Company
Stan McCarthy has spent 40 years in the brick industry, all of it with Acme Brick Company. During his tenure, he has repeatedly distinguished himself, not only within Acme but also within the brick industry as a whole.
Before joining Acme, Stan studied finance at West Texas State (now A&M) University, in Canyon. His instructors included Dr. Harrold Melton, who would join Acme in the late 1970s. Stan initially worked in the banking industry, but the two kept in touch. In January 1986, Stan came to work for Harrold Melton, by then Vice President and General Sales Manager, as a sales representative based in Dallas.
In May 1999 he transitioned from sales to management, with a promotion to manager of the company’s West Texas Sales Region, where he oversaw six sales locations. A year later he transferred to Acme’s highest volume sales region, North Texas, as its Regional Sales Manager.
In 2002, Stan received the Acme Brick Company’s highest honor, the President’s Award, which recognizes an associate who consistently practices excellence and continually advances Acme’s corporate culture of accountability.
The following year, Stan was promoted to senior management, as General Sales Manager, and has been based at Acme’s Fort Worth headquarters ever since. In December 2004, he was promoted to Vice President of Sales, and since 2006 he has served Acme Brick Company as Senior Vice President of Sales.
Consummate Team Builder
His commitment to team building has benefited not only Acme Brick Company but also the industry as a whole, through the Brick Industry Association (BIA). Stan has served on the organization’s Marketing, Sales and Training Committee since 2016 – and has chaired this committee since 2020. He has also served on BIA’s Thin Brick Council since 2022.
In prior years, Stan has contributed his time and energy to other BIA committees and task forces as well. These include the Southwest Regional Board of Directors (Vice-Chair), the Residential Committee, and the Production Builder Task Group.
Stan McCarthy retires from Acme Brick Company on March 31. Succeeding him as Vice President of Sales is John Brewer.
