If cleaning is required, contact your Acme Brick Company representative for recommendations on the proper product. We recommend that all masonry cleaning products be utilized in accordance with the manufacturer’s dilution ratios and instructions. Use acid for cleanup only in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. The use of metallic brushes or certain high-pressure wash equipment may alter the appearance of brick. Acme Brick Company is not responsible for damage resulting from improper cleaning methods or materials.

Our Good Masonry Practices handbook suggests the following:

  • Use proper cleaning materials rather than muriatic acid.
  • Ask your supplier for cleaning information.
  • Work on the shady side of the wall.
  • Keep the surface of the wall wet where the cleaning materials are being used.
  • Work in small areas. Do not wet the full length or width of a house at one time and then begin cleaning.
  • Rinse the cleaner and dissolved mortar off the wall immediately. Do not allow the cleaner and the mortar removed from the wall to be pulled into a wall surface which is not wet.

The Brick Industry Association provides a good resource on cleaning brickwork here. This Technical Note addresses cleaning of brickwork and brick pavements. Methods for removal of efflorescence and a variety of specific stains are discussed, which should result in the successful cleaning of brickwork.
